Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Posted: 2/13/2004

Study Population:

  • Diagnosed COPD patients from a managed care organization (MCO) who were 45 years old or older as of start date of evaluation period were selected for drug utilization evaluation (DUE).
  • Patients with two or more claims with ICD9 codes confirming COPD were classified as COPD diagnoses.

Objectives:

  • Quantify baseline pharmacy and medical resource utilization among a cohort of MCO with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to design appropriate interventions to address both providers and patients, and to evaluate the impact of interventions on compliance and subsequent health care utilization.
  • Generate demographic frequencies, diagnosis demographics, and COPD medication use demographics. Assess performance of regression model in predicting COPD when applied to patients' pharmacy claims data. Produce gains and lift charts to validate presumed COPD regression model and comparison of presumed to diagnosed COPD patients.
